“Footballer and symbol of the Italian national team, with which he won the world championship in 1982, Paolo Rossi was a great talent of Italian football and sport. The latest mural by Eduardo Kobra (São Paulo, 1975), the internationally renowned Brazilian street artist known for his pop frescoes inspired by great historical figures, is dedicated to him. Recognized throughout the world for his kaleidoscopic style and strong graphic impact, the painter from São Paulo was ‘hired’ by the cultural association Wallabe to create a huge open-air painting in homage to the iconic footballer. The location chosen for the intervention (financed by a special crowdfunding campaign and thanks to the significant contribution of the Hera Group) was the Everest Tower, a seventeen-story building that is a symbol of the city of Vicenza and of the economic boom of the 1950s. Paolo Rossi spent several years of his career in the Veneto capital, remaining tied to the city even after the footballer's transfer to Juventus. “Once in the city centre, we head straight for a side street of Via Roma, the narrow Vicolo Venezia. At number 13, just before the entrance to the park, you will notice a faded writing on the wall: ‘The Right People want snow’. It is thought to have been made around the 1940s and a couple of meanings are attributed to it. This area of the city is where once lived the so-called Popol Giost, that is, the poor part of the population that made a living with gimmicks and jobs, including shoveling snow: one of the two meanings of the writing is precisely related to the fact that the Right People waited for the snow to be able to work a little and, therefore, earn some money. “Glaring out from the brick wall of an old sweet factory on the edge of the Olympic site in east London, a furious face throws a toothy snarl across the canal. Half monkey, half skull, with a golden clothes peg for a nose, the creature has every reason to be angry. It is the work of local street art collective, the Burning Candy Crew, whose psychedelic scenes defined this industrial stretch of the River Lea Navigation, until they were mostly painted over in preparation for the 2012 Games. Now, on those very walls, the Olympic legacy's public art body has unveiled a series of new artworks – with not a local artist in sight. ‘It was a very deliberate decision,’ says Sarah Weir, former head of arts and cultural strategy for the Olympics, who now heads up the Legacy List charity that commissioned the work. ‘We unashamedly wanted to showcase the best international artists and transform this part of the canal into a destination for street art. We want it to have the same energy as somewhere like Camden – I hope people will come on boat tours to see the work.’ The four new works, which occupy prominent stretches of wall along both sides of the water, are by artists invited from Brazil and Sweden, Italy, Scotland and the Netherlands. On one building, a graphic black-and-white mural by Swedish artist Ekta Ekta climbs up to the eaves, a tangled pile of odds and ends that form a teetering Heath Robinson contraption.
