Les Lilas

Quand je vais chez la fleuriste,
Je n'achète que des lilas...
Si ma chanson chante triste
C'est que l'amour n'est plus là.

Comme j'étais, en quelque sorte,
Amoureux de ces fleurs-là,
Je suis entré par la porte,
Par la porte des Lilas.

Des lilas, y en avait guère,
Des lilas, y en avait pas,
Z'étaient tous morts à la guerre,
Passés de vie à trépas.

Je suis tombé sur une belle
Qui fleurissait un peu là,
J'ai voulu greffer sur elle
Mon amour pour les lilas.

J'ai marqué d'une croix blanche
Le jour où l'on s'envola,
Accrochés à une branche,
Une branche de lilas.

Pauvre amour, tiens bon la barre,
Le temps va passer par là,
Et le temps est un barbare
Dans le genre d'Attila.

Aux coeurs où son cheval passe,
L'amour ne repousse pas,
Aux quatre coins de l'espace
Il fait le désert sous ses pas.

Alors, nos amours sont mortes,
Envolées dans l'au-delà,
Laissant la clé sous la porte,
Sous la porte des Lilas.

La fauvette des dimanches,
Celle qui me donnait le la,
S'est perchée sur d'autres branches,
D'autres branches de lilas.

Quand je vais chez la fleuriste,
Je n'achète que des lilas...
Si ma chanson chante triste
C'est que l'amour n'est plus là.
(George Brassens)
Lilacs

When I go to the florist,
I only buy lilacs...
If my song sings sadly
It's because love is no longer there.

As I was, in a way.
In love with these flowers,
I came in by train,
Through the station Porte de Lilas

Lilacs, there's hardly any,
Lilacs, there's aren't any,
They all died at war,
Passed away.

I came upon a beauty
Which was blossoming a little,
I wanted to graft onto it
My love for lilacs.

I marked a white cross.
The day it vanished
Hanging from a branch,
A branch of lilacs.

Fragile love, hold onto the helm tightly,
Time will pass,
And time is a barbarian
Not unlike Attila.*

Through the middle where his horse passes
Love doesn't grow,
All across space
The desert appears beneath his feet.

Now our lovers are dead,
Vanished into the beyond
Leaving the keys under the door,
At Porte de Lilas.

The Sunday warbler,
The one that sings A to me,
Perched on other branches
Other lilac branches.

When I go to the florist,
I only buy lilacs...
If my song sings sadly
It's because love is no longer there.

“The school was founded in 1904 by the Catalan painter Claudio Castelucho, in rue de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, near to the Académie Colarossi. From 1909 the Académie was jointly directed by the painters Martha Stettler, Alice Dannenberg and Lucien Simon. It was dedicated to both painting and sculpture. It did not teach the strict academic rules of painting of the École des Beaux-Arts, and led to art that was free from academic constraints.[4] An attraction was the low level of fees, even lower than those of the Académie Julian (which had to be paid in advance). It was said that all that was provided was a model and warmth in the winter. In 1957, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière was acquired by the Charpentier family, founders of the Charpentier Academy. It still operates under its original name, and provides two free workshops, one for painting and drawing, the other for sketches, as well as evening classes.” (Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Wikipedia)

“On 21 December 1873 Liu Yongfu and around 600 Black Flags, marching beneath an enormous black banner, approached the west gate of Hanoi. A large Vietnamese army followed in their wake. Garnier began shelling the Black Flags with a field piece mounted above the gate, and when they began to fall back he led a party of 18 French marine infantrymen out of the city to chase them away. The attack failed. Garnier, leading three men uphill in a bayonet attack on a party of Black Flags, was stabbed and hacked to death by several Black Flag soldiers after stumbling in a watercourse.” (Francis Garnier, Wikipedia)

“The original Marne stone carving is at Craiova Art Museum, in Romania. Brâncuși created many versions of The Kiss, further simplifying geometric forms and sparse objects in each version, tending each time further toward abstraction. His abstract style emphasizes simple geometrical lines that balance forms inherent in his materials with the symbolic allusions of representational art. Here, the shape of the original block of material is maintained. Another version of The Kiss serves as an adornment of a tomb in Montparnasse cemetery in Paris, France but has since August 2017 been covered up in a box.” (The Kiss, Wikipedia)

“The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (French: Cathédrale Saint-Alexandre-Nevsky, Russian: Собор Святого Александра Невского) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral church located at 12 rue Daru in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. It was established and consecrated in 1861, making it the first Russian Orthodox place of worship in France. It is the see of the Patriarchal Exarchate for Orthodox Parishes of Russian Tradition in Western Europe, recently transferred to the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Moscow. It was built in part through a gift of 200,000 francs from Tsar Alexander II. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral had not been aligned with the Patriarch of Moscow since the Russian Revolution. But as of 14 September 2019 the Jurisdiction of the parish community of the cathedral was transferred to the Patriarchate of Moscow. The cathedral should not be confused with Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral, which is a provincial cathedral of the Patriarchal Exarchate in Western Europe (Moscow Patriarchate).” (Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Wikipedia)
