“In 1958, a Museum's Friends Association was established, and with the participation of Przemysław Smolarek (employee of the National Museum, Szczecin), the Association organised an exhibition titled From a paddle to a nuclear drive in Artus Court in Gdańsk. Przemysław Smolarek lobbied for the creation of a dedicated maritime museum in Poland and his efforts were successful: in 1959, by the decision of adequate authorities (government ministers aided by the Museum of Technology, Warsaw), such a museum was formed in Gdańsk. Przemysław Smolarek was tasked with the preparation work. The Museum was officially established on 1 January 1962, and Smolarek was nominated its director. He remained at this position until his death in 1991. At first the Museum was located in the medieval Gdańsk Crane, but soon started to branch out. In 1963 the first branch – the Lighthouse Museum in the Rozewie Lighthouse – was opened, followed by the Fishery Museum on Hel Peninsula in 1972. In 1972 the institution has been renamed Polish Maritime Museum and granted the status of a national institution.” (National Maritime Museum, Wikipedia)

London, September 2014

“Dr Johnson's House is a writer's house museum in London in the former home of the 18th-century English writer and lexicographer Samuel Johnson. The house is a Grade I listed building. Built at the end of the seventeenth century by wool merchant Richard Gough, (died 1728) it is a rare example of a house of its era which survives in the City of London (this refers only to the 'Square Mile' of the City area, as there are many other houses of this period elsewhere in Greater London) and is the only one of Johnson's 18 residences in the City to survive. Four bays wide and five stories tall, it is located at No. 17, Gough Square, a small L-shaped court, now pedestrianised, in a tangle of ancient alleyways just to the north of Fleet Street. Johnson lived and worked in the house from 1748 to 1759, paying a rent of £30, and he compiled his famous A Dictionary of the English Language there. In the 19th century, it saw use as a hotel, a print shop and a storehouse. In 1911, it was purchased by newspaper magnate and politician Cecil Harmsworth, who later commented: ‘At the time of my purchase of the house in April 1911, it presented every appearance of squalor and decay … It is doubtful whether in the whole of London there existed a more forlorn or dilapidated tenement.’ He restored the house under the direction of architect Alfred Burr and opened it to the public in 1914. It is now operated by a charitable trust, Dr Johnson's House Trust Ltd. The house features panelled rooms, a pine staircase, and a collection of period furniture, prints and portraits. There are exhibitions about Johnson's life and work. The house has a commemorative plaque installed on its exterior by the Royal Society of Arts in 1876.” (Dr Johnson's House, Wikipedia)

“This is the highest part of the park, from here you can see most of Barcelona. Currently there are three crosses on top of a hill of stone, named ‘Calvari’. Two of them indicate the cardinal points (N-S-E-W), and the other pointing skyward. But this was not the wishes of Gaudí, he wanted to build the chapel here in the top of the Park Güell, but they found some prehistoric remains. So he used the remains as an inspiration and build this monument with some similarities with the caves.” (Turó de les tres creus, Park Güell)

“The Stadion Narodowy im. Kazimierza Górskiego (Kazimierz Górski's National Stadium), known for sponsorship reasons as the PGE Narodowy since 2015 (with patron being added in 2021), is a retractable roof football stadium located in Warsaw, Poland. It is used mostly for concerts and football matches and is the home stadium of Poland national football team. With a seating capacity of 58,580, the stadium is the largest association football arena in Poland. Its construction was started in 2008 and was finished in November 2011. It is located on the site of the former Stadion Dziesięciolecia, at the Zieleniecka Avenue in Praga Południe district, near the city center. The stadium has a retractable PVC roof which unfolds from a nest on a spire suspended above the centre of the pitch. The retractable roof is inspired by the cable-supported unfolding system of Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt, Germany, and is similar to the newly renovated roof of BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The stadium is also very similar to the Arena Națională in Bucharest in terms of age, capacity and the roof.” (Stadion Narodowy, Wikipedia)

“The refurbishment of Barcelona's first covered food market by the architectural practice of Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue was completed in 2005. The old Santa Caterina food market revealed a gleaming, undulating and brightly coloured roof designed to be seen from the air. The roof is attached to the building by a wooden structure, and a vast mosaic of coloured ceramic pieces, representing fruit and vegetables, boldly breaks with the traditional look of a market. The market has always been characterised by a desire to innovate. Santa Caterina Market was built in 1845 to provide the neighbourhood's blue-collar community with foodstuffs. The spacious, modern market building was constructed on the former site of the Convent of Santa Caterina, from which it takes its name. During the post-Civil War period, Santa Caterina became the main food supplier to the towns on the outskirts of Barcelona. People from Sant Adrià, Santa Coloma and Mataró came on the tram to buy food in this market in times of shortage. Today, the market is still worth a visit: the modern exterior ushers us into a traditional market with food stalls and restaurants which serve outstanding-quality produce.” (Santa Caterina Market, Turisme de Barcelona)

Avinguda de la Catedral
Barcelona, March 2017

“The Museu Diocesà opened its doors after a long process of renovation with a new area dedicated to one of the great architects and creators of the history of humanity: Antoni Gaudí. Thanks to the most modern technology the exhibition offers an innovative virtual tour. The Barcelona Diocesan Museum is located in the historic building of Pia Almoina, in Plaza de la Catedral. It is a construction with a Gothic body dating back to 1435 and another, Renaissance in style, added in 1546. The museum's collection is the result of the donation of works of art by the parishes in the Barcelona Diocese. It includes paintings, sculptures, gold work, fabrics, clothing and numismatics ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The main theme is religious, and is the common denominator of all the pieces. The collection includes true masterpieces. Of particular relevance are the works from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Some of them are outstanding examples of the art of their period. Amongst others it is worth highlighting the mural paintings by Polinyà, from the 12th century; the carving of the Virgin of Santa Maria de Toudell or the silver Romanesque cross by Riells del Fai.” (Museu Diocesà de Barcelona, Catalunya)
