“San Gregorio Magno al Celio, also known as San Gregorio al Celio or simply San Gregorio, is a church in Rome, Italy, which is part of a monastery of monks of the Camaldolese branch of the Benedictine Order. On March 10, 2012, the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of the Camaldolese in 1012 was celebrated here at a Vespers service attended by Anglican and Catholic prelates and jointly led by Pope Benedict XVI and Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury. San Gregorio is located on the Caelian Hill, in front of the Palatine. Next to the basilica and monastery is a convent of nuns and a homeless shelter run by Mother Teresa of Calcutta's congregation, the Missionaries of Charity.” (San Gregorio Magno al Celio, Wikipedia)

Florence, January 2020

“The Buontalenti Grotto (also called ‘Grotta Grande’ in Italian) is located in the far north of the Boboli Gardens alongside the entrance to the Vasari Corridor. The Grotto’s origins are linked to the construction of the aqueduct coming from the Ginevra spring, whose construction began in 1551 for the purposes of supplying water first to the Boboli Gardens and then to Palazzo Vecchio. In addition to the pipeline leading from the Gardens to the Palace, a reservoir was built to ensure a continuous water supply even during dry periods. The first works began in 1557 under the direction of Davide Fortini, son-in-law of architect and sculptor Niccolò Tribolo who oversaw the first project of the Boboli Gardens. The same year the task was passed to Giorgio Vasari, who created a façade with Tuscan columns and pilasters supporting an architraved pronaos. The façade featured two niches where the sculptures of Apollo and Ceres by Baccio Bandinelli would stand in 1560. The reservoir later lost its original function and Grand Duke Francesco I decided to transform it into a grotto. Between 1583 and 1587, Bernardo Buontalenti directed the reservoir's transformation, modifying Vasari's architectural layout and designing the entire decorative part. In 1583 the walls of the three rooms which make up the grotto were completed. Between 1583 and 1584, sculptor Piero di Tommaso Mati worked on creating the figures in the first room, completed the following year with the placement of Michelangelo's four Slaves in the corners of the room.” (Uffizi Gallery)

“Vincenzo de' Rossi (b. Fiesole, 1525. d. Florence, 1587) was an Italian sculptor. Rossi was mentored by Baccio Bandinelli. Many of Rossi's works historically were incorrectly attributed to Michelangelo, such as Dying Adonis. Some of his most famous works were his sculptures of the Twelve Labours of Hercules, of which he only completed seven. Six of these sculptures are located in at the Palazzo Vecchio. The seventh labour, Hercules with Atlas, is located at the Villa di Poggio Imperiale.” (Vincenzo de' Rossi, Wikipedia)

Florence, January 2020

“The Kaffeehaus is one of the most interesting buildings inside the Boboli Gardens and is also one of the works carried out at the wishes of Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Lorraine, between 1774 and 1785. Work on the ‘new house under the fortress’, as it was initially called, began in 1774, from designs by Zanobi Del Rosso. In the first part of 1775, the new building was completed and ready to be used as a resting place, in which the court could enjoy a hot chocolate drink during its walks. The building is an airy pavilion, circular in shape and with an onion-shaped dome top. It is divided over three separate levels, beautifully inserted in a complex of small gardens and orchards. The interior is divided over four main levels and side mezzanine floors with triangular stairs.” (Kaffeehaus, Uffizi Galleries)

Santa Caterina a Magnanapoli
Salita del Grillo
Rome, June 2019

“Santa Caterina a Magnanapoli is a baroque church dedicated to St. Catherine of Siena on Largo Magnanapoli on the slopes of the Quirinal Hill in Rome. A group of Dominican tertiary nuns, living in a small house in via Santa Chiara where St. Catherine had died, were looking for larger premises. Lead by Porzia Massimo whose late husband was a Conti, from 1574 they successively acquired parts of properties belonging to the Conti family at Magnanapoli to establish their convent there, financially assisted by Pope Gregory XIII. The originally small community thrived and quickly expanded from 27 nuns in 1574 to 108 in 1626, many of whom from important noble families. The construction of a church began in 1608, initially at expense of Cardinal Scipione Borghese to a design by Carlo Maderno, but stopped in 1613. Meanwhile, the monastery acquired the Torre delle Milizie in 1619. In 1628, the building of the current church was begun to a design by Giovanni Battista Soria. In 1631 the chancel and two adjacent chapels were completed. Building then came to a halt until the final portion of the church took shape from 1636 and concluded with the facade in 1641. The consecration of the church by cardinal Alessandro Cesarini took place in 1640. Another Dominican nuns' convent, Santi Domenico e Sisto, is just a stone's throw away. When the Via Nazionale was laid out in the 19th century, the street level was lowered. This raised the church entrance to a considerable height above the street. To allow access, a double staircase leading to the portico was built. Under the stairs is the entrance to the Crypt of the Fallen, constructed in 1934 and dedicated to the priests who were killed in the First World War.” (Santa Caterina a Magnanapoli, Wikipedia)
