“Parallel to the smaller eastern side of the square, the first of the two current columns was built in 1464: the winged lion that surmounts it is the symbol of the Republic of Venice and was placed there in 1473, after Vicenza had surrendered to the Serenissima. Over a century and a half later, a second column was added next to it, with the statue of Christ the Redeemer, in 1640. The choice was widely discussed and was decided in honour of the city and its citizens. “Passing Piazza San Pietro and following Via della Fratta, one comes to a crossroads where seven roads converge, including Via del Fosso: here is the Column of the Madonna dello Stellario. The column, of Corinthian order, rests on a pedestal depicting a view of Lucca. On the top is a statue of the Madonna, donated to the ‘Compagnia della Concezione o dello Stellario’ (Compagnia of the Conception or of the Stellario), which had its seat in San Francesco. The statue, the work of the sculptor Giovanni Lazzoni, is a Baroque insert of considerable importance and was placed above the column at the end of the 17th century.” (Madonna dello Stellario, Route You)

“The Column of Portugal is a monument in Siena, located in Viale Vittorio Emanuele II, between Porta Camollia and the Antiporto di Camollia. The column commemorates the meeting that took place here on 24 February 1452 between Frederick III of Habsburg and Eleonora of Portugal, accompanied by 400 Sienese ladies, in the presence of the then bishop of Siena Enea Silvio Piccolomini. The scene had such an impact on the society of the time that it was also depicted by Pinturicchio in the Piccolomini Library. The park was acquired by the Municipality of Florence in 1869, which committed the renovation of the park to the architect Felice Francolini. Sport clubs which regularly competed in the Quercione meadow were: Florence Football Club, Itala Foot Ball Club, Juventus Foot-Ball Club, Firenze FBC, Club Sportivo Firenze and PGF Libertas. “The origins of Siena are uncertain, but the city long promoted the belief that it was founded by Senius and Ascius, the sons of Remus (the twin brother of Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome), hence the image of the Lupa Senese (the she-wolf suckling two infants), which one sees throughout the town. ​Following the murder of their father, Senius (who gave his name to the city) and his brother Ascius were forced to flee Rome on horseback, riding respectively on a black horse and a white horse, hence the two colours of the Balzana, the city’s coat of arms.” (The Wolf of Siena, Walking Tours of Florence & Siena )
