“The Promenade Plantée was the world’s first elevated park (first phase completed in 1994) and the first “green space” constructed on a viaduct. The entire feature runs some 4.5 km (about 3 miles) from the Opéra Bastille to the Bois de Vincennes. The elevated portion of the promenade is the 1.5-km (roughly 1-mile) stretch between the Opéra and the Jardin de Reuilly, after which the promenade descends to street level and even passes through a few railway tunnels. Located underneath the elevated portion is the Viaduc des Arts, which stretches along the Avenue Daumesnil. Its former archways house specialized commercial establishments.”
