La Farola de Málaga

La Farola de Málaga
Paseo de la Farola
Málaga, September 2023

“La Farola, besides being one of the two Spanish lighthouses having a feminine name, is a recurring element in Málaga's iconography. Much loved by the city's inhabitants, they started building it in the 19th century and it was finished in 1816, in the time of Ferdinand VII (1784 – 1833). It has undergone several renovations during its history. The first was after the damage caused by the 1884 earthquake. Improvement work was undertaken in 1885 and a new device fitted to improve the light that guided seamen at night. The lighthouse keeper's house was enlarged in 1909. During the Civil War, although orders were given to turn off the light and paint the building to make it more difficult to see, it was damaged and needed repairing. It can be found on the promenade of the same name, in the Malagueta district between the Port of Málaga and Paseo Marítimo Ciudad de Melilla. The expansion of the port and the transformation of Muelle Uno (Pier One) are two reasons not to miss this interesting tourist location.” (La Farola, Visita Málaga)

Flying Dutchman’s Lighthouse

Leuchtturm (Lighthouse), Donauinsel (Danube Island), Vienna

Donauinsel (Danube Island)
Vienna, September 2017

“This lighthouse never operated on the Viennese Donauinsel. In fact, this is not a lighthouse, but only a part of the Wagner opera, The Flying Dutchman’s scenery. It was constructed at the Lake Constance stage at Bregenz in 1989, later transported to the Technical Museum in Vienna. Finally it found its place on the long Donauinsel in 1997. It soon became part of the city landscape, a favourite theme for many photographers, despite it is functioning as a weather station and a city webcam.” (Lighthouses of the Danube, Donau Insel)

The “Lanterna”

The 117-meter “Lanterna” (Lighthouse of Genoa)
Rampa della Lanterna
Genoa, April 2016

“It is built on the hill of San Benigno at some little distance from the Sampierdarena neighborhood. The cape on which the Lanterna stands was at one time a peninsula before the nearby coastline was filled in and reshaped. To the west, it marked the entrance to the original port of Genoa, today the Porto Antico. Over time, the hill on the cape assumed the name ‘Capo di Faro’, or ‘Lighthouse Cape’; it is also sometimes referred to as the cape of San Benigno, after the convent that once stood there. Today, the hill is gone save for a small rise upon which the lighthouse stands; the rest of it was removed to provide infill for other areas of the city.” (Lighthouse of Genoa, Wikipedia)
