Geoffrey Barkington

Geoffrey Barkington” memorial bench by Patrick McEvoy, Jubilee Gardens, Houndsditch, City of London, London

“Geoffrey Barkington” memorial bench by Patrick McEvoy, 2018
Jubilee Gardens
Houndsditch, City of London
London, May 2023

Here lies Geoffrey Barkington of Houndsditch,
10th December 2003 to 16th September 2017,
aged 98 dog years. May he rest in peace.

“The memorial is a bench, and is one of ten new ones in the City of London. They are the result of a 2018 design competition organised by the London Festival of Architecture, the City of London Corporation and Cheapside Business Alliance. It was designed by Patrick McEvoy, possibly Geoffrey's owner. The benches are said to be temporary so it's possible that Barkington's memorial has gone too.” (Geoffrey Barkington, London Remembers)

Plaza de Zocodover
Toledo, September 2022

“The second expansion was done and dates from the beginning of the 17th century. This consisted in the demolition of a series of houses of little value that seems to be difficult the total vision of Zocodover from its top to the bottom and vice versa. Never more arches were realized and probably this fact is due to that it was not wanted to remove meters to the square. Nowadays Zocodover is one of the places of the city where many events and celebrations are held, as well as serving as a popular meeting point and enjoyment of the Toledo and above all a must for the thousands of tourists who mark the streets of the historical quarter throughout the year.” (Plaza de Zocodover, Wikipedia)

“A romantic place hidden in the shade of mature trees in the heart of city under the Legion Bridge enchants visitors with its old-time atmosphere and exceptional views of the city directly from the surface of the Vltava River. Occasionally, celebrations, concerts, open-air festivals, and various other cultural events are held here.” (Střelecký Island, Prague.eu)

Riverwalk, Westminster
London, September 2016

“Riverwalk is located by the river Thames, near the Tate Britain and next to Henry Moore sculpture Locking Piece, which has been on display in Riverside Walk Gardens, since 1968. In line with Stanton William’s architecture and especially in keeping with one of Henry Moore's most symbolic works, Pablo Reinoso has create two bench-sculptures in black steel. Only Children Bench, created to be used by the children as a playful area and We Watch You Too Bench, an other bench-sculpture which provides an area for quiet contemplation in the Riverwalk grounds, whose name is an amusing reference to the MI6 which is just opposite.” (Pablo Reinoso art at Riverwalk, Custot Gallery Dubai)

Cleary Gardens

Cleary Gardens
Huggin Hill, City of London
London, September 2016

“During the Middle Ages the area was the hub of the wine trade, a tradition evoked by sensory flowers, shrubs and climbers, suggesting bouquets of wines, and a miniature vineyard on the terrace. The garden is named after Fred Cleary, who, during the 1970's was instrumental in encouraging the planting of trees and the creation of new gardens throughout the square mile. During the blitz, the house which once stood here was destroyed exposing the cellars. A shoemaker called Joe Brandis decided that he would create a garden from the rubble, collecting mud from the river banks and transporting soil from his own garden in Walthamstow to the site. His success was such that on 29th July 1949 Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother visited the new garden. Next to the pergola is a bed of Yatsuka Tree peonies, presented to the City by the Japanese Island of Daikonjima as a symbol of goodwill in April 2006.” (Cleary Gardens, City of London)
