“The Mars fountain, also known as the Gros-Caillou fountain, is a fountain in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, France. The Mars fountain was built from 1806 to 1808 according to the plans of the engineer François-Jean Bralle. Its sculpted bas-reliefs are by Pierre-Nicolas Beauvallet, a student of Augustin Pajou. It was initially called the Gros Caillou Fountain. Originally, the water came from the Gros-Caillou steam pump. In 1859 the arcaded square surrounding it was built. At the foot of the fountain, a flood marker indicates the level reached by the waters of the Seine during its flood of 1910; the riverbed is located 570 m away. The fountain was listed as a historical monument in 1926.” (Fontaine de Mars, Wikipedia)
