Testa Addormentata
“Testa Addormentata” (Sleeping Head) by Igor Mitoraj, 1983
Jubilee Place, Canary Wharf
London, January 2005
“Igor Mitoraj's works combine the surreal with the antiquity of Ancient Greece and Rome. His beautifully crafted sculptures are both thoughtful and monumental. At Canary Wharf are three of his works, representing some of the themes that occupy him: here is the bandaged face of Testa Addormentata. Mitoraj divides his time between his studios in Paris, France and Pietrasanta in Italy.” (Testa Addormentata, Canary Wharf Group)

It Takes Two
“It Takes Two” by Bob Allen, 2002
Canada Square Park, Canary Wharf
London, January 2005
“It Takes Two is a bronze cast of an original carving in English yew from the fallen bough of an ancient tree listed in the Doomsday Book. Bob Allen takes his inspiration from nature, often carving in wood using traditional tools and working in the open air. His aim is to reveal the hidden quality in the wood he uses, and in this case when he started work it was the female form that emerged first, later complemented with a male form. They are locked together in a dance, entwined and inseparable.” (It Takes Two, Canary Wharf Group)

Fountain Court
Fountain Court
Middle Temple
City of London
London, January 2005
“On the perimeter of this circle lies Fountain Court, amid the buildings of the Temple; there has been a small fountain there for three hundred years, commemorated by writers as diverse as Dickens and Verlaine, while the softness and serenity of this small spot have been experienced by many generations. The fountain and its pool were once square-fenced with palisades, then encircled by iron railings, but now stand unbarred; whether in a square, or a round, or open on all sides, the fountain plays on, and its atmosphere has remained constantly evocative. One Londoner came here as a schoolboy, with no knowledge of its history or its associations, and immediately fell under the spell of its enchantment; it was as if innumerable good acts or kind words had emerged here as calmly and as quietly as the little fountain itself. At last, in these pages, he has the chance of recording his debt.” (Peter Ackroyd, London: The Biography)

Crabtree & Evelyn
Crabtree & Evelyn
Covent Garden’s Market Building
London, January 2005
“Crabtree & Evelyn was a retailer of body, fragrance and home care products. Beginning with one store in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1971, the brand grew to an international presence, with hundreds of locations globally. The founders sold the chain in 1996, and the brand was subsequently resold several times. In October 2016, Crabtree & Evelyn was acquired by Nan Hai Corporation of Hong Kong. The brick-and-mortar stores became increasingly unprofitable, with numerous closings in 2009. It was announced in November 2018 that all retail and wholesale operations were to cease to exist worldwide. The Crabtree & Evelyn brand was relaunched in July 2019 as an online-only retailer. The US and European websites stopped all sales in early 2022.” (Crabtree & Evelyn, Wikipedia)

Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria by Joseph Boehm, 1880
Temple Bar Memorial
Strand, Holborn
London, January 2005
“Following the removal of Wren's gate, Horace Jones, Architect and Surveyor to the City of London, designed a memorial to mark Temple Bar, which was unveiled in 1880. The Temple Bar Memorial stands in front of the Royal Courts of Justice. The elaborate pedestal in a neo-Renaissance style serves as the base for a sculpture by Charles Bell Birch of a dragon supporter (sometimes erroneously referred to as a griffin) bearing a shield of the arms of the City of London. The pedestal is decorated with statues by Joseph Boehm of Queen Victoria and her son the Prince of Wales, the last royals to have entered the City through Wren's gate, which event is depicted in one of the reliefs which also decorate the structure.” (Temple Bar, Wikipedia)
