Casa de la Química
Casa de la Química
Plaza de la Reina Victoria Eugenia
Segovia, September 2025
“The Casa de la Química (House of Chemistry) is located in the Plaza de la Reina Victoria Eugenia, east of the colossal fortress of the Alcázar of Segovia. A work by Sabatini and the most notable example of Neoclassical architecture in Segovia, it is a building that, in addition to its architectural uniqueness, offers exceptional historical value as a cultural and scientific centre during a crucial period in the history of Spain. It was built between 1787 and 1790 as a laboratory for the Royal College of Artillery and its creation was part of the changes carried out by the Bourbons in 18th century Spain. Joseph Louis Proust, a prominent French chemist, was the director of the laboratory for 13 years and taught chemistry and metallurgy. His research, carried out during his time in Segovia, was of capital importance, formulating fundamental concepts such as the Law of Definite Proportions. Furthermore, Proust marked a historic milestone by carrying out the first flight for military purposes in history.” (Casa de la Química, Wikipedia)
