Remembering how the NY cabbies drive like madmen, I'd prefer the carriage. Great picture of the contrast, with the horse front and center. So it's called a vis-a-vis? Ah, because you sit face to face! Cool.
I remember having to hold the door of a cabbie way back in the 80s... It was rattling so bad I thought it would fall off and I held on to it right to my destination!
It's nice that you still get carriage rides in so many places, funny that I never do it!
We took one of those carriages last May, and I loved it. I always look at them and have never taken the ride before, so this time I wanted to. I didn't notice a smell, but then I grew up around horses and animals.

This is so cool...with that old method of transportation amidst all the iconic cabs!
I've got a couple of similar shots (not as good) on L & L Photography - the New York gallery...
Have a wonderful weekend!

They are nice in pictures, but I really can't stand the... smell, even when passing by. It's my worst olfactory memory of the Big Apple!

Looks like there's room for everyone in NYC's streets ;-)
Personally I'd take a cab. I'm not fond of horses (and don't like the smell either).
