I understand that padlock love is really big in Europe and I think it is becoming fashionable here although I have not seen any such padlocks or lovers locking padlocks on bridges.
It's a nice sentiment but gives a false sense of security regarding a relationship, methinks. Padlocks are notoriously insecure; all you need is a bolt cutter.
And I've seen some pretty darn good-looking "bolt cutters," if you get my meaning.
I saw padlocks and flowers on the bridge in Riga - there is a tradition that just married couple left it there. I wonder if this one in Paris was left on the same occasion.
I still haven't been there myself and would have had every pain in the world to decipher the Cyrillic alphabet, although I once learned it...
@ Jacob - I agree: lots of bolt cutters around...
@ joo - A movie started the craze here, but I think they are mostly very young people.
@ ciel - No padlocks on Pont des Arts last year, now they are everywhere. I have seen some even on the statue of Pont Alexandre III!
Nice picture, but with too many, certainly a new form of defacing. Interesting for awhile, and then . . . way too much. I saw none at all in Paris in 2008, and we walked everywhere.
I think it's sweet. You have to have faith in love :-)
