Madonna di Piazza
“Madonna di Piazza con bambino” by Niccolò dell'Arca, 1478
Palazzo d'Accursio
Piazza Maggiore
Bologna, June 2015
“Also notable is the terracotta high relief of Madonna di Piazza (1478) on the wall of the Palazzo Comunale in Bologna. In the marked drapery folds is seen the influence of Jacopo della Quercia and also traces of the dynamic naturalism of his contemporary Andrea del Verrocchio.” (Niccolò dell'Arca, Wikipedia)

Sacrificial Anode
“Sacrificial Anode” by Eilis O’Connell, 2007
Montgomery Square, Canary Wharf
London, September 2014
“Made in varying materials from steel and bronze to plastics and found objects, Eilis O’Connell’s sculptures show her meticulous attention to surface detail and close observation of the world around her. A ‘sacrificial anode’ refers to an anode attached to a metal object, such as a boat or underground tank, in order to inhibit its corrosion. This sculpture was purchased following O’Connell’s exhibition in Jubilee Park in Spring 2013. Two other sculptures by the artist, Under and Over II and Under and Over IV are found in 50 Bank Street.” (Art on the Estate, Canary Wharf Group PLC)

La Samaritaine
Former department store La Samaritaine
Rue de la Monnaie
Quartier Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, 1st arrondissement
Paris, July 2014
“Paris’s answer to Grace Brothers, a sprawling department store that has stood derelict for 10 years, is finally to be reborn as a riverfront hotel and a luxury supermarket for tourists. After endless legal wrangles. France’s highest administrative court has decided that part of the spectacular site near the Pont Neuf could be reconstructed in an adventurous, modern style. The original La Samaritaine building, an icon of Art Nouveau architecture, will be preserved and turned into an upmarket hotel with a rooftop restaurant. An adjoining building, a later addition and already partly demolished, will be reconstructed as a luxury brand ‘supermarket’ with a wavy glass front that has already been nicknamed by its critics ‘the shower curtain’.” (Court ruling on derelict Parisian Art Nouveau landmark, The Independent)

Narrowboat
Narrowboat used as home
Little Venice, Paddington
London, September 2014
“A narrowboat or narrow boat is a boat of a distinctive design, made to fit the narrow canals of the United Kingdom. In the context of British Inland Waterways, ‘narrow boat’ refers to the original working boats built in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries for carrying goods on the narrow canals (where locks and bridge holes would have a minimum width of 7 feet (2.1 m); some locks on the Shropshire Union are even smaller). The term is extended to modern ‘narrowboats’ used for recreation and more and more as homes, whose design and dimensions are an interpretation of the old boats for modern purposes and modern materials.” (Narrowboat, Wikipedia)

Three-Way Piece: Points
“Three-Way Piece: Points” by Henry Moore, 1967
Revson Plaza, Columbia University
Morningside Heights
New York, September 2008
“The curvaceous bronze form’s three ‘feet’ rest on a bronze platform set in a concrete cylindrical base. With no clear back or front, “Three-Way Piece” encourages the viewer to walk around the sculpture and observe the campus from different vantage points. Its placement on the north end of Revson Plaza emphasizes the viewer’s elevated position on a pedestrian bridge above Amsterdam Avenue. The undulating surfaces echo the round walls of St. Paul’s Chapel to the northwest but contrast to the linear beams of Jerome Greene Hall to the southeast.” (Flying Horses, Tightrope Walkers and Other Campus Icons, Columbia Law School)

Portico di San Luca
A section of the 3.8 km long Portico di San Luca
Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca
Bologna, June 2015
“While a road now leads up to the sanctuary, it is also possible to reach it along a (3.8 km) monumental roofed arcade (Portico di San Luca) consisting of 666 arches, which was built in 1674-1793. It was meant to protect the icon as it was paraded up the hill. A yearly procession from the Cathedral of San Pietro in the centre of Bologna to the Sanctuary goes along this path. Originally the arches held icons or chapels erected by the patron family.” (Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, Wikipedia)

Chimera
“Chimera” by Dario Tironi, 2014
Giardino della Gherardesca
Four Seasons Hotel Firenze
Florence, April 2015
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the work of Italian artist Dario Tironi is evident proof. While most people look at discarded objects and see only trash, he sees precious materials for his beautiful sculptures. Old toys, discarded computer components, broken calculators, even plastic bottles, they're all part of Tironi's recycled universe. Similar to Robert Bradford, who uses old toys for his sculptures, and Leo Sewell, the young Italian artist manages to glue together various junk items and create detailed sculptures of people and animals, and gives everyone who sees his art a whole new perspective on the concept of recycling.” (Italian Artist Recycles Found Objects into Colorful Sculptures, Odditycentral)
