I understand that padlock love is really big in Europe and I think it is becoming fashionable here although I have not seen any such padlocks or lovers locking padlocks on bridges.
It's a nice sentiment but gives a false sense of security regarding a relationship, methinks. Padlocks are notoriously insecure; all you need is a bolt cutter.
And I've seen some pretty darn good-looking "bolt cutters," if you get my meaning.
I saw padlocks and flowers on the bridge in Riga - there is a tradition that just married couple left it there. I wonder if this one in Paris was left on the same occasion.
@ Jacob - I agree: lots of bolt cutters around... @ joo - A movie started the craze here, but I think they are mostly very young people. @ ciel - No padlocks on Pont des Arts last year, now they are everywhere. I have seen some even on the statue of Pont Alexandre III!
Nice picture, but with too many, certainly a new form of defacing. Interesting for awhile, and then . . . way too much. I saw none at all in Paris in 2008, and we walked everywhere.

ReplyDeleteI still haven't been there myself and would have had every pain in the world to decipher the Cyrillic alphabet, although I once learned it...
