They're called landmarks. They were there before the other buildings. When they were built, the population was a lot less than now. This would have been built for the size of the neighbourhood, with living above. Love to see these reminders of history.
Squashed. That is the first thing that came into my mind. It sure does look strange to a classy building like this standing there all alone.
