Monument to Victor Hugo by Auguste Rodin, 1890
Avenue Victor-Hugo / avenue Henri Martin
Quartier de la Porte-Dauphine, 16th arrondissement
Paris, July 2012
“Rodin was awarded the commission in 1889. The sculptor chose to depict Victor Hugo in exile, seated amongst the rocks of Guernsey, his arm outstretched as if to calm the waves. It was an image both of the poet lost in contemplation and of the champion of the Republican cause.” (
Monument to Victor Hugo, Musée Rodin)
Even before I read who sculpted it, I was going to say it is gorgeous.
ReplyDeletegreat sculpture , do you know Victor Hugo was born in Besançon ? :)
ReplyDeleteVery striking! Rodin is one of my favorite sculptors. I think we enjoyed the Rodin museum in Paris as much as the larger, more well-known ones. Love all that green foliage, too!
ReplyDeleteRe your comment on Ocala: There are gators in that water so people need to be careful. But I've heard that gators only eat once a month. The problem is one never knows when that "once a month" rolls around. :)
