  1. I know it can't be seen in this delightful pic along the Seine, but do you know why they shave the horses' rumps into a checkerboard? I don't. You seem to know everything. Thought I'd ask.

  2. Thank you! What is Tapirgal talking about? I've not seen such a thing. A number of cities use cops on horseback here, too. The better to run down the crooks I guess. Nice shot, VP!

Wonder if they got those horses from Ocala?

  3. I'd love to have her job (when there is no trouble on the streets).
Funny to see mounted police not wearing riot gear.

Checkerboard rumps?? Where do they do that? Strange.

  4. I don't see them very often but I've always liked the concept.

  5. Another place you see police on horseback is Canada. RCMP = Royal Canadian Mounted Police... although now people just mean "the cops". I have seen police on horseback in Paris, too... but I recall they were more formally dressed. Short sleeves? Neat.

  6. VP, that's a horse who doesn't like its job... or its boss!!

  7. This is such an interesting picture because it captures so many different elements and textures.

  8. Amazing video! I really enjoyed that strange moving view of Paris. Maybe it's only the parade horses that have checkerboards. I'll try to post one by tomorrow.

  10. @ tapirgal - About the checkerboard marks I understand they are not typical of parade horses: Horse Quartermark.

  11. @ VP - That was fascinating. After looking at the gallery, I like the checkerboard best. It looks elegant. There's even a kangaroo. I think Jacob could have a new career in Ocala if he invests in one of those combs.

  12. Thanks for the links. Quarter marks! --what won't they think of next!
What a runaway horse! I understand a policewoman nabbed him. Chapeau to her.
