@ joo - I have seen it in your pictures, but it was already quite good even then: full of Finnish tourists (a two hour ferry ride from Helsinki, less by hydrofoil). After Vilnius and Riga, then still quite dreary, in Tallinn they already had some tourist assistance, quite nice supermarkets and even took credit cards.

Now Tallin is modern, rich and very European city - you wouldn't say it was part of the USSR for such a long time!
