Passerelle des Douanes
Passerelle des Douanes
Canal Saint-Martin
Quartier de la Porte-Saint-Martin, 10th arrondissement
Paris, July 2002
“The Jane Birkin footbridge, formerly known as the ‘Customs footbridge’, is a pedestrian footbridge crossing the Saint-Martin canal, in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. The Jane Birkin footbridge is located in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. It crosses the Marais basin of the Saint-Martin canal, near the Temple locks. It is situated at the end of the Rue Léon-Jouhaux, between the Quai de Valmy and the Quai de Jemmapes, at the end of the Square Frédérick-Lemaître. This site is served by the République and Goncourt metro stations. The footbridge was originally called the ‘Customs footbridge’ (sometimes ‘Temple footbridge’ and even ‘Customs-and-Temple footbridge’). It took its name from the proximity of the rue de la Douane (now rue Léon-Jouhaux ) and the former site of the Customs administration. Since a deliberation by the Council of Paris in July 2025, it has borne the name of Jane Birkin (1946-2023), Franco-British actress, singer, screenwriter and director. The footbridge is a cast iron arch bridge. This footbridge, which was built in 1860, is the oldest on the Saint-Martin canal.” (Passerelle Jane-Birkin, Wikipedia)
