Monument to Heinrich Zille by Thorsten Stegmann
Poststraße, Nikolaiviertel
Berlin, September 2011
“Born in Dresden in 1858, Heinrich Zille’s family moved to Berlin when he was a child. A lithographer by trade, he became the first prominent artist to evoke the social development of the city as the tendrils of modernity reached Berlin, creating an instantly recognisable style in his drawings of everyday life and real people, often featuring the bleak Hinterhöfe (inner courtyards) around which so much of their lives revolved. Even during his lifetime Zille was acknowledged as one of the definitive documenters of his time, and since his death in 1929 his prolific photographic work has also come to be seen as a valuable historical record.” (Lonely Planet, Berlin Travel Guide, 6th Edition)

Place Dalida, Montmartre
Quartier des Grandes-Carrières, 18th arrondissement
Paris, July 2011
“Since her death, Dalida has become a cult figure to a new generation of fans. In 1988, the Encyclopædia Universalis commissioned a poll, which was eventually published in the French newspaper Le Monde, and which aimed to reveal the personalities who had the greatest impact on French society. Dalida polled second, behind Général de Gaulle. She is also a gay icon in France. In 1997, the corner of the rue Girardon and rue de l'Abreuvoir in Montmartre, Paris, was inaugurated as Place Dalida and a large bust in her memory was erected (which was quickly defaced with graffiti).” (Dalida, Wikipedia)

The Man Who Measures the Clouds
“The Man Who Measures the Clouds” by Jan Fabre, 1998
Arengario of Palazzo Vecchio
Piazza della Signoria
Florence, May 2016
“Both indoor and open-air, there are Fabre’s many faces and incarnations: the warrior, the knight, the philosopher, the worm and the beetle. Some of his self-portraits laugh at the human condition; some others are looking at the sky, sheltering from the rain, trying to light a cigarette. Many have horns and animal features. The ‘guards’ who name the entire project are, in fact, the small army of bronze beetles who stand on the bastions in defense of the fort, Fabre’s ‘angels of metamorphosis.’” (Jan Fabre’s Art Conquers Florence With Bronze Turtle, BlouinArtinfo)

Quai de l'Hôtel-de-Ville
Quartier Saint-Merri, 4th arrondissement

“Étienne Marcel (between 1302 and 1310 – 31 July 1358) was provost of the merchants of Paris under King John II, called John the Good (Jean le Bon). He distinguished himself in the defense of the small craftsmen and guildsmen who made up most of the city population. As a delegate of the Third Estate, he played an important role in the general assemblies held during the Hundred Years' War. In 1357, he found himself at the head of a reform movement that tried to institute a controlled French monarchy, confronting the royal power of the Dauphin or heir to the throne.” (Étienne Marcel, Wikipedia)
